Frequently asked questions
What is latency and why does it matter for VoIP?
Latency is the round-trip time for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and back. For VoIP, high latency (above 150 ms) causes noticeable conversation delays — the "satellite phone" effect where people talk over each other. Under 80 ms is ideal.
What is jitter?
Jitter is the variation in latency between consecutive packets. Even if your average latency is low, high jitter causes choppy, robotic-sounding audio because packets arrive out of order or in bursts. Under 20 ms of jitter is excellent for VoIP.
How much packet loss is acceptable for VoIP?
Anything above 1–2% packet loss will cause audible audio gaps and dropped syllables. Under 0.5% is excellent. Modern VoIP codecs can conceal occasional lost packets, but sustained loss degrades call quality significantly.
Do I need a fast internet connection for VoIP?
No — VoIP calls use very little bandwidth (typically 50–100 kbps per call). What matters is consistency, not raw speed. A stable 5 Mbps connection will outperform a 100 Mbps connection with high jitter or packet loss.
My score was low. How can I improve it?
Common fixes: use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi, reboot your router, reduce network congestion (limit streaming/downloads during calls), check for firmware updates on your router, or contact your ISP if the issue persists. QoS (Quality of Service) settings on your router can also prioritize VoIP traffic.
Is this test accurate?
This test measures your connection to our servers, which gives a good approximation of real-world VoIP performance on the SIPSTACK platform. For the most accurate reading, run the test during your normal business hours when your network is under typical load.
