Understanding Inconsistent Caller ID Names

Section titled “Understanding Inconsistent Caller ID Names”

Applies To: All phone carriers and mobile devices

When people receive calls from your SIPSTACK number, the name displayed on their caller ID may be missing, incorrect, or different across different devices. This is a known limitation of how caller ID works across modern carrier networks — it is not specific to SIPSTACK.

Several factors contribute to this behavior:

Carrier augmentation: Many major mobile carriers (Rogers, Bell, Telus, Koodo, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and others) use third-party databases to supplement or override the caller ID information transmitted with a call. These databases pull from sources like online directories, Yellow Pages, and number lookup services. Even when SIPSTACK transmits the correct name, the carrier may display a different name based on its own data.

Consumer apps: Apps like Truecaller, Hiya, and RoboKiller — as well as built-in smartphone features — maintain their own contact name databases. These can override carrier-transmitted caller ID entirely. Individual users also store contacts on their devices, which always take priority over transmitted CNAM data.

Dynamic data: Caller ID databases are updated constantly. A name that was correct yesterday may be incorrect or missing today due to updates in third-party directories.

Spam prevention measures: Carriers and app developers actively modify caller ID names as part of anti-spam efforts. A number associated with high call volume or complaints may have its CNAM overridden with a warning label.

  • Verify your business listing on online directories such as Google Business Profile, Yellow Pages, and LinkedIn. Accurate, consistent listings improve the chances that carrier databases display your correct name.
  • Register your CNAM through SIPSTACK. Contact SIPSTACK Support to update the name transmitted with calls from your number.
  • Ask contacts to report incorrect names in apps like Truecaller or Hiya. Consistent user reporting can correct entries in those databases over time.
  • Educate your team on why caller ID may appear differently to different recipients — it is not a configuration error in most cases.
