Snom IP Phone, DECT and Paging Setup Guide

← Hardware & Devices

SIPSTACK Nova PBX can generate the configuration for Snom D-series desk phones, the Snom PA1 paging amplifier and Snom M300 and M900 DECT bases. You register the device in Switchboard, point it at your organization’s provisioning URL, and it downloads its lines, keys and dial plan.

Snom models are marked Beta in the Switchboard model picker and on this page.

M400: the model is in the Switchboard catalog, but SIPSTACK does not generate a configuration for it yet. Set its handset accounts up by hand on the base’s web UI with each extension’s SIP credentials (Switchboard → Nova PBX → Extensions → [extension] → SIP Auth).

DECT handsets are not registered in Switchboard on their own. Register the base; see DECT Cordless Phones.

Before You Start: Your Provisioning URL and PIN

Section titled “Before You Start: Your Provisioning URL and PIN”

Every Nova PBX organization has one provisioning URL and one provisioning PIN that all of its devices share:

https://<slug>:<PIN>@cfg.sipstack.com/<slug>/
  • <slug> is your tenant slug (also the username).
  • <PIN> is your provisioning PIN — 8 digits for organizations set up since September 2026.

Both live in Switchboard → Nova PBX → System → PBX Settings → Provisioning Access. The URL is shown with the PIN masked; the Regenerate PIN button reveals a new PIN, once. The PIN is shown once when generated. Lost it? Rotate it in Provisioning Access — devices keep working on the old PIN for 24 hours.

There is no per-device password and nothing to copy from an individual device’s page: the same URL provisions every device in your organization.

Step 1: Register the Device in Switchboard

Section titled “Step 1: Register the Device in Switchboard”
  1. Log in to Switchboard.
  2. Go to Nova PBX → Devices → Devices and click Register device. If the page asks you to generate your provisioning PIN first, do that in PBX Settings → Provisioning Access — devices cannot be registered until the PIN has been generated.
  3. Enter the device’s MAC address from its label.
  4. Pick Snom and the model (it shows a Beta badge), then click Register device.
  5. On a desk phone or PA1, assign an extension to line 1 and add any BLF or speed-dial keys. On an M300 or M900 base, assign an extension to each handset slot on the Handsets tab.
  6. Click Apply Changes. Applying publishes the device’s configuration to the provisioning server — until you apply, the server has nothing to hand the device.

Step 2: Point the Device at the Provisioning Server

Section titled “Step 2: Point the Device at the Provisioning Server”

Option A — DHCP. If your DHCP server hands out option 160 with the organization URL above, the device can fetch its configuration on its own. Some devices read option 66 instead; if yours does, set option 66 to the same URL. See DHCP Option 160.

Option B — enter it in the web UI.

  1. Open http://{device-ip} in a browser (a desk phone shows its IP on screen).
  2. Go to Advanced → Update.
  3. Set Setting URL to https://cfg.sipstack.com/<slug>/ and save.
  4. When the device asks for provisioning credentials, enter <slug> as the user name and your provisioning PIN as the password. If your firmware does not ask, put them in the URL instead: https://<slug>:<PIN>@cfg.sipstack.com/<slug>/.
  5. Reboot the device. It requests its own file by MAC address and registers.

SIPSTACK never writes the Setting URL back into the configuration it sends, so the URL you entered (with your PIN) stays on the device.

Desk phones (D-series)

  • Lines. Every line the model has: extension credentials, the Nova SIP server (also set as the outbound proxy), and the voicemail mailbox. A line with no extension assigned is turned off and its credentials are cleared.
  • Dial plan. Rules that send a call the moment it is complete: 911, 988 and 112, Nova’s single star codes (*97, *72, *78 and the rest), star codes followed by a 4-digit extension or page group (*80, *81, *85, *87, *98, *55), and 10- and 11-digit North American numbers. Everything else (3- and 4-digit extensions, *80 + a 3-digit group, 011 numbers) is sent unchanged when you press OK or #, or when you stop dialling.
  • Paging and intercom auto-answer. Pages (*80) and intercom calls (*81) are answered hands-free when the phone isn’t already on a call.
  • BLF keys. A BLF key shows the watched extension’s state and picks up its ringing call (Nova *87).
  • Speed-dial and feature keys. Speed dial, voicemail, group pickup (*88), intercom, paging, Do Not Disturb and call forward keys dial the matching number or Nova code.
  • Time zone and NTP server, when your organization or device has a time zone chosen and Snom has a matching zone.
  • Admin password, when your organization has one set.

PA1 paging amplifier

  • One line with the extension’s credentials, set to answer every call automatically so pages play straight through the speaker.

M300 / M900 DECT bases

  • One SIP account per handset slot, with the extension you assigned on the Handsets tab, the Nova SIP server and the voicemail number.
  • Time zone and NTP server.

SIPSTACK sends Snom devices a “reprovision” signal when you click Reprovision on the device page. Support for this brand is in Beta, so the signal is not yet confirmed on every model: if the device has not picked up your change after a minute, reboot it.

  • The Setting URL (see above).
  • Park keys. A park key is skipped and Switchboard shows a warning. Park calls by transferring them to the park extension instead.
  • Expansion modules. Keys on a module are skipped with a warning.
  • Codec preferences, message-waiting tuning and user-level web credentials. The phone keeps its own.
  • Handset pairing on M-series bases. SIPSTACK creates the accounts on the base but does not bind handsets to them. Pair each handset to the base and choose its account in the base’s web UI.
  • Dial plan and auto-answer on M-series handsets. Handsets send the whole number at once, so Nova codes pass unchanged; pages ring the handset rather than opening its speaker.
  • The M400 base (manual setup, see above).
  • Firmware. SIPSTACK does not update Snom firmware unless you pin a firmware version for the model in Switchboard, and only where its firmware catalog lists one.

Registration fails, then the device can’t reach SIPSTACK at all for a whileThe device is registering to the wrong SIP server or domain, often a value left over from a previous provider.
