Setting Up Inbound Routes

← How-To Guides

An Inbound Route tells Nova PBX where to send calls when a specific phone number (DID) is dialed. Each phone number on your account needs at least one inbound route to route calls to a destination — extension, auto attendant, ring group, voicemail, or queue.

Create your destinations before setting up routes:

Route TypeBest For
Time Range Based RouteAutomatic routing by schedule (business hours, after-hours, holidays)
Operator Managed RouteManual day/night toggle controlled by an operator or admin
  1. Log in to the Nova PBX portal.
  2. Navigate to Routes and Permissions → Inbound Routes.
  3. Click Create Time Range Based Route in the action bar.
  4. Configure:
FieldDescription
DIDSelect the phone number to assign this route
DescriptionDescribe what this route does (e.g., “Main number — business hours”)
WhenSelect a time schedule (e.g., “Business Hours”, “All Hours”)
Run ScriptSelect the destination (auto attendant, extension, ring group, etc.)
  1. Fill in any additional options that appear based on your destination selection.
  2. Click Save.

The Name Prefix field adds a label before the caller’s name display on ringing phones. For example, setting prefix "Sales:" causes extensions to display Sales: John Smith when that DID is called — useful when multiple DIDs ring the same extensions.

  1. Click Create Operator Managed Route in the action bar.
  2. Select the DID and configure the open and closed destinations.
  3. The route can be toggled manually by an authorized user at any time.

See Setting up Operator Managed Routes for full toggle instructions.
