Configure Your ISP Modem to Bridge Mode

← Network & Firewall

Many ISPs provide combination modem/router devices with built-in wireless capabilities. These all-in-one units are not always compatible with VoIP devices. Placing the ISP modem into bridge mode disables its routing functions and passes the public IP directly to a separate, compatible router that you control.

  • A compatible router with a WAN port
  • Admin access to your ISP-provided modem
  • Instructions from your ISP for enabling bridge mode (also called “disable gateway features”)

Due to the wide variety of ISP-provided modems, follow these general steps:

  1. Contact your ISP and request instructions for configuring your modem to bridge mode (also referred to as disabling gateway features).
  2. Log into your ISP modem’s web interface and apply the bridge mode or disable gateway settings as directed by your ISP.
  3. Allow the modem to reboot after saving the settings.
  4. Unplug all devices from the ISP modem.
  5. Connect your compatible router to the ISP modem:
    • Use the WAN port on your router.
    • Plug it into any available LAN port on the ISP modem.
  6. Log into your new router and configure your network settings.
    • Set strong wireless passwords if the router has Wi-Fi.
    • Enable any security features recommended by the manufacturer.
  7. Connect your IP phones and other devices to your new router.
