Polycom VVX Phone Enters Letters Instead of Numbers When Dialing

← Troubleshooting

If your Polycom VVX phone enters letters or special characters when you press number keys to dial, the phone is in URL dial mode instead of Number mode. URL mode is used to dial SIP addresses (e.g., user@domain.com) rather than standard phone numbers.

Affects: Polycom VVX series — models 2XX, 3XX, 4XX, 5XX, and 6XX.

  • Pressing 2 shows A, B, or C instead of 2
  • Phone number digits are not entered correctly
  • Calls fail because the dialed string contains letters
  1. Pick up the handset or tap the dial screen to open the dialer.
  2. Look for a soft button labelled URL or Number at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Number to switch to standard numeric dialing.
  4. Try dialing a number to confirm digits appear correctly.

Non-touchscreen models (VVX 2XX, 3XX, 4XX)

Section titled “Non-touchscreen models (VVX 2XX, 3XX, 4XX)”
  1. Pick up the handset or press the New Call soft key.
  2. Look for a physical button or soft key labelled URL or Number next to the screen.
  3. Press it to toggle back to Number mode.
  4. Verify the mode change by dialing a number.

Tip: If the mode switches back unexpectedly, it may be getting changed by a provisioning template. Contact SIPSTACK support to lock the dial mode in your phone’s configuration.
