Can I Use SIPSTACK SMS for Emergency Purposes?
Section titled “Can I Use SIPSTACK SMS for Emergency Purposes?”No. SIPSTACK programmable SMS should not be used as a direct means of contacting emergency services. SMS communications to emergency numbers are disabled by default on SIPSTACK. Promising such connectivity to your end users would violate our Acceptable Use Policy.
Users who need to contact emergency services should use a standard wireless voice call. In Canada and the United States, mobile phones can place emergency calls to 911 even without an active SIM card.
Why Voice Calls Are Preferred for Emergencies
Section titled “Why Voice Calls Are Preferred for Emergencies”The FCC and equivalent regulators recommend voice calls over text for emergency contact:
- Voice allows a 911 operator to ask questions and gather information in real time — two-way text exchange takes longer
- Text messages have character limits that can truncate critical details
- Emergency services automatically receive the caller’s phone number and approximate location on most voice calls
Permitted Non-Emergency Notifications
Section titled “Permitted Non-Emergency Notifications”SIPSTACK can be used for notifications that do not constitute direct life safety communications:
- Early warning alerts and public safety advisories
- Event cancellations or schedule changes
- General status notifications
