Enabling QoS for VoIP on Ubiquiti EdgeMax Routers
Enabling QoS for VoIP on Ubiquiti EdgeMax Routers
Section titled “Enabling QoS for VoIP on Ubiquiti EdgeMax Routers”Ubiquiti EdgeMax routers include a Smart Queue Management system that simplifies VoIP traffic prioritization. This guide covers how to configure QoS to improve call quality.
Step 1: Determine Bandwidth Requirements
Section titled “Step 1: Determine Bandwidth Requirements”Run a Speed Test
Section titled “Run a Speed Test”Measure your internet upload and download speeds using a tool such as speedtest.net. Test at different times to capture variations during peak and off-peak usage.
Calculate VoIP Bandwidth
Section titled “Calculate VoIP Bandwidth”Allocate approximately 100 Kbps per concurrent call.
| Concurrent Calls | Recommended Allocation |
|---|---|
| 5 | 500 Kbps |
| 10 | 1 Mbps |
| 25 | 2.5 Mbps |
| 50 | 5 Mbps |
Step 2: Configure QoS on the EdgeMax Router
Section titled “Step 2: Configure QoS on the EdgeMax Router”Access the EdgeRouter
Section titled “Access the EdgeRouter”Connect to your EdgeRouter via a web browser or SSH and log in with your admin credentials.
Set Up Smart Queue
Section titled “Set Up Smart Queue”- Navigate to the QoS tab.
- Select Smart Queue.
- Add a new smart queue and configure:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Upload Bandwidth | Speed test upload result minus 10–15% overhead |
| Download Bandwidth | Speed test download result minus 10–15% overhead |
Advanced Configuration via CLI (Optional)
Section titled “Advanced Configuration via CLI (Optional)”For more precise VoIP prioritization, configure traffic policies through the EdgeOS CLI to prioritize:
- UDP on ports 5060 (SIP signaling) and 10000–60000 (RTP media)
- TCP on port 5060 (SIP over TCP)
This ensures VoIP packets are given higher precedence during congestion.
Step 3: Monitor and Adjust
Section titled “Step 3: Monitor and Adjust”After applying the configuration, use the EdgeMax interface to monitor VoIP traffic performance. Look for packet loss or jitter that indicates inadequate prioritization. Adjust bandwidth allocations as your call volume changes.
