Enabling QoS for VoIP on UniFi Gateways and Routers
Section titled “Enabling QoS for VoIP on UniFi Gateways and Routers”Configuring QoS on your UniFi gateway or router ensures VoIP traffic receives priority over general internet use, maintaining call quality during periods of high network utilization.
Step 1: Determine Bandwidth Requirements
Section titled “Step 1: Determine Bandwidth Requirements”Run a Speed Test
Section titled “Run a Speed Test”Measure your upload and download speeds using a tool such as speedtest.net. Test at multiple times of day to capture peak and off-peak performance.
Estimate VoIP Bandwidth
Section titled “Estimate VoIP Bandwidth”Allocate approximately 100 Kbps per concurrent call.
| Concurrent Calls | Recommended Allocation |
|---|---|
| 5 | 500 Kbps |
| 10 | 1 Mbps |
| 25 | 2.5 Mbps |
| 50 | 5 Mbps |
Step 2: Configure QoS in UniFi
Section titled “Step 2: Configure QoS in UniFi”Access the UniFi Controller
Section titled “Access the UniFi Controller”Open a browser, navigate to your UniFi controller’s IP address, and log in.
Create a VoIP User Group
Section titled “Create a VoIP User Group”- Go to Settings → Networks.
- Select Edit Network for the network handling VoIP traffic.
- Scroll to Advanced Options and locate User Groups.
- Create a new user group:
- Set Rate Limiting to your calculated VoIP bandwidth.
- Assign a higher priority if the option is available.
- Assign this user group to the devices or VLANs that carry VoIP traffic.
Configure Firewall Rules for VoIP Ports (Optional)
Section titled “Configure Firewall Rules for VoIP Ports (Optional)”For more granular control:
- Go to Settings → Routing & Firewall.
- Under Firewall, create port groups for:
- SIP: port
5060(TCP) - RTP: ports
10000–60000(UDP)
- SIP: port
- Create firewall rules to prioritize or permit traffic for these port groups.
Step 3: Monitor and Adjust
Section titled “Step 3: Monitor and Adjust”Monitor VoIP performance through the UniFi Controller after applying the configuration. Look for packet loss or quality dips. Adjust the bandwidth allocation for the VoIP user group as call volumes change.
