Does SIPSTACK Support Concatenated SMS Messages?

Section titled “Does SIPSTACK Support Concatenated SMS Messages?”

Yes. SIPSTACK supports sending and receiving concatenated SMS messages of up to 1,600 characters (equivalent to ten 160-character segments).

All Canada and US carriers support concatenated messages, with one exception: US Cellular does not support concatenated messages and also limits individual messages to 150 characters instead of the standard 160.

When you send a message longer than 160 characters, SIPSTACK automatically splits it into segments and adds a special header. Receiving carriers use this header to reassemble the segments on the destination handset, so the message appears as a single unified message.

If the receiving carrier does not support concatenated messages, SIPSTACK splits your message into individual SMS messages and automatically prepends a page counter to the beginning of each one — for example: (1/3), (2/3), (3/3). All segments still appear under a single Message ID on SIPSTACK.

SIPSTACK also supports inbound concatenated messages. Messages over 160 characters sent to your SIPSTACK number will be received as a single message, as long as the sending carrier supports concatenation. The charge for an inbound concatenated message is calculated based on the total number of segments received.
