How A2P 10DLC Trust Scores Affect Message Throughput

Section titled “How A2P 10DLC Trust Scores Affect Message Throughput”

Under the A2P 10DLC system for US business SMS, your message throughput is determined by two factors: your Trust Score and your Campaign type.

SMS message sending throughput is measured in Message Segments per Second (MPS). Each message segment contains up to 160 GSM-7 encoded characters. Messages with more characters or different character encoding may span multiple segments.

The Campaign Registry (TCR) assigns every registered brand a Trust Score using a reputation algorithm. The score reflects how trusted your business is to the carrier network.

Trust Score levels:

  • Low
  • Medium
  • High

A higher Trust Score results in higher message throughput. Obtaining a Trust Score is required for all A2P 10DLC registrations in the US.

Your MPS limit applies across all of your registered Campaigns. It is shared across all US long code numbers in a Campaign and across all participating wireless carriers. Whether you send from a single number to one carrier or distribute across multiple numbers and carriers, the same MPS cap applies.

Yes. You can submit a request to TCR for additional review. The appeal requires a one-time fee of $40 USD. TCR will reassess your brand, but there is no guarantee the score will increase.

Does This Affect MMS or Toll-Free Numbers?

Section titled “Does This Affect MMS or Toll-Free Numbers?”

No. A2P 10DLC throughput limits apply to long code SMS only. MMS throughput and Toll-Free SMS are not currently affected by these rules. A US Toll-Free number has a default throughput of 3 MPS across all US and Canadian carriers.

Does This Affect Messaging Outside the United States?

Section titled “Does This Affect Messaging Outside the United States?”

No. These throughput rules only apply to messages sent to US recipients on US carrier networks.
