Toll-Free SMS Support on SIPSTACK

← Regulatory

SIPSTACK toll-free numbers can send and receive text messages (SMS and MMS) with mobile numbers in Canada and the US, but only after the number is verified.

Since November 8, 2023, carriers in the US and Canada block text messages sent from toll-free numbers that are not verified. An unverified toll-free number cannot be used to text customers, even at low volume.

To verify a toll-free number you need to provide:

  • Your business information: legal business name, address, website and a contact person.
  • Your use case: what kind of messages you will send, with sample messages.
  • Proof of opt-in: how recipients agree to receive your texts (for example, a sign-up form or a checkbox with the consent wording).

Review can take up to about 5 business days. Plan for this before you launch a campaign.

Some kinds of messages are not eligible for toll-free verification, so they cannot be sent from a toll-free number at all:

  • Contests, sweepstakes and prize draws
  • Gambling
  • Cryptocurrency
  • Loan offers and debt relief
  • Cannabis, alcohol and tobacco

A toll-free number is not a way around these rules. See Forbidden Message Categories.

Toll-free numbers do not use A2P 10DLC registration. They use toll-free verification instead, as described above. Local (10-digit) numbers that text US recipients need 10DLC registration. See What is A2P 10DLC?.

Toll-free numbers from outside Canada and the US do not support SMS or MMS.
